PROOF OF KWAME KILPATRICK'S SEX SCANDAL REVEALED IN TEXT MESSAGES

When I think of the number of scandals that have plagued the administration of Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick, the first thing that comes to mind is "pimpin' ain't easy." Everything from rumors of wild parties at his mansion to accusations of misapporpriation of city funds has burdened the mayor now in his second term.

Often referenced as the "hip hop" mayor, Kilpatrick and his Chief of Staff Christine Beatty have been found to have lied under oath last summer during a police whistle-blower lawsuit against the City of Detroit as evidenced by newly revealed text messages on city-issued pagers from 2002-2003.

The text messages serve as proof that Kilpatrick and Beatty were involved in a sexual and romantic relationship that has been implied to have been related to the firing of two Detroit police officers.

A county jury awarded $6.5 million to the two officers in the lawsuit against the city and Kilpatrick. The jury said Kilpatrick and the city unlawfully dismissed two officers, who claimed they suffered after investigating allegations of wrongdoing within Kilpatrick's security unit.

Kilpatrick is married, and Beatty was married at the time.

"I'm madly in love with you," Kilpatrick wrote in a text on Oct. 3, 2002.

"I hope you feel that way for a long time," Beatty replied. "In case you haven't noticed, I am madly in love with you, too!"

On Oct. 16, 2002, Kilpatrick wrote Beatty: "I've been dreaming all day about having you all to myself for 3 days. Relaxing, laughing, talking, sleeping and making love."

In his testimony last summer, at one point Kilpatrick expressed anger about claims of an affair between him and Beatty.

"I think it was pretty demoralizing to her — you have to know her — but it's demoralizing to me as well," the mayor said. "My mother is a congresswoman. There have always been strong women around me. My aunt is a state legislator. I think it's absurd to assert that every woman that works with a man is a whore." (He couldn't find another way to characterize this like, "Just because a man and woman work closely together doesn't mean they are romantically involved.")

All this sounds so familiar - very Bill Clintonish.

As referenced in a previous post, Kilpatrick, the son of Congresswoman Carolyn Cheeks Kilpatrick, was heavily supported and endorsed by talk show host and radio personality Tavis Smiley during his initial run for mayor of the 11th largest and poorest urban metropolis in the United States.

According to his biography, Kilpatrick has been recognized as having made significant economic advancements in efforts to revitalize the struggling motor city by way of aggressive economic policies.

Kilpatrick issued a statement Wednesday night saying the messages "reflect a very difficult period in my personal life."

"It is profoundly embarrassing to have these extremely private messages now displayed in such a public manner," he said. "My wife and I worked our way through these intensely personal issues years ago. I would now ask that the public and the media respect the privacy of my wife and children and of Christine Beatty and her children at this deeply painful moment for our families."

At the time of this posting, we're still awaiting the decision of the Wayne County District Attorney's office as to whether perjury charges will be brought against Kilpatrick or Beatty.

Parts of this story was contributed by excerpts of the Associated Press.

This saddening me about the mayor. He is such an intelligent man, but he has made so many mistakes. I am a native Detroiter and he has done a lot for the city, but his personal life is like a story from a steamy novel.

Hi Divatude:

I must admit, I wasn't aware of his vast array of credentials until I took the time to go to his biography. He actually seems quite incredible on paper.

It is ashame. There is something to be said for statesmanship. This is one of the reasons I support Senator Obama for president in hopes of that kind leadership and representation.

Let me say this, it is heart wrenching watching these allegations unfold. The bottom line is proving he actually did the text messaging and the facts will prevail in the case.
Does he deserve jail time, no I don't think so, Do I feel something went on with him and Christine, sure, I can speculate and only assume. Do he need to step down, no. I feel he need to stand in times of trials and tribulations. Despite his personal strifes, he has a City to run and until this is proven, we need to stick to important issues, like old fire department equipment breaking down, Detroit Police Officers with outdated equipment, I can go on and on. We will see if Prosecutor Kim Worthy takes on the case or pass it along to her Deputy prosecutor. I believe her staff will investigate and the truth will prevail. I feel bad for his wife and children, and I pray they make it through this.

Thanks for commenting Lady Closing Arguments.

The City of Detroit has been in need for such a long time. I pray too that all involved families as well as the citizens of Detroit can make it through this.

This is a tough time for our country, however, I am confident we can make it through this indeed.

Look forward to you coming back to visit and comment.

Best,

CBW

I feel for his wife but considering her history, I feel a little more for the mistress.

Perhaps he should have gone with having his own private company. That's the only area in which this sort of behavior is acceptable.

This is terrible, he needs to really reflect on this hisself. Does he need to step down yes, he hasnt done anything for the city but cripple it. Everyone knows that the first term for a mayor, the achievements are from the previous administration. This man has only taken from the city and given to his friends (contracts) that are worthless. He should step down, fast.

I am a Detroiter, and as I watched Mayor Kilpatrick apologize to the City of Detroit, and to his family for the hurt and embarassment he caused, I felt bad for him and his family. However, I STILL don't care who he slept with. What hurts me is the damage to the city's already-tarnished image, the loss of three police officers, and the waste of $9million dollars because our Mayor - an attorney - didn't just plead the fifth amendment.
Don't make this personal, Mr. Mayor.

First of all, whom ever wrote and quoted what the Mayor said in his public apology did not quote him accurately. He never mentioned Chrstine Beatty or the word text in that speech, not once did he incriminate himself.

First of all EBW, I was confused about what you were speaking of, then I figured it out. In a statement the Mayor released last Thursday from his office as reported in the Associated Press and CNN and the other 10 zillion other news sites, he does mention her name in a released written statment. The quote is accurate.

In the video tape, no, he doesn't mention Beatty or the word text in his public statement beside his wife.

It's little late for him to worry about how much incrimination he's doing to himself, don't you think?

Always appreciate your comments.

Peace.

There are two issues at play here. Let's summarize them: 1) Allegedly, an elected official broke the law by perjuring himself; spending city money on personal trips; forced the resignation of police officers in the whistle blowing case last year; 2) someone in the public eye is committing adultery.

The first issue is the one our city needs to investigate. Mayor Kilpatrick's own personal behavior (issue no. 2) aint nobody's bizness. But the first issue, hey folks, he is breaking big time laws and if you or I did that, it would be all over for us four sure! Let's let the attempts at justice and investigation reveal what we as a community (and the city hall) need to do next.

people of detroit have to stop voting for someone just because he is black or just because he is a Democrat. Yeah his resume looks impressive, but so what he is a crook and a liar, a jive ass turkey. Wake up detroit, get educated, Start a grass roots effort to put a respectable non-hip hop person in office. Detroit is a third world city in the US of A, and it is ignored. People are sick of hearing the victim mentality from resident Detroiters
