The Salute to Greatness dinner Saturday night will have a special glow.Martin Luther King III, the eldest son of revered civil rights leader — Martin Luther King Jr., will announce that he has been married for nearly two years to longtime girlfriend Arndrea Waters.
And better yet, that the couple is expecting a daughter in late spring.
The Salute to Greatness dinner is an annual awards event that serves as the major fund-raiser for the Martin Luther King Jr. Center on Auburn Avenue. Coretta Scott King, widow of the civil rights leader, made her last public appearance at the dinner two years ago, only three weeks before she passed away from cancer.
The eldest child of the Kings — Yolanda King — suddenly passed away last May of an apparent heart attack in California.
"In light of the devastating losses that our family has suffered with the passing of Aunt Coretta and Yolanda, this is great news that a grand-child of Martin Luther King is coming into the world," said Isaac Farris Jr., president and CEO of the King Center who is a first cousin of the King children. "Our legacy continues."
King III married Waters shortly after his mother's passing, but the couple decided to keep the marriage private until now.
King III is the first of Martin Luther King Jr.'s four children to get married, and he will be the first sibling to have a child.

Whaaat... you mean that Dexter Scott King is still available? I used to dream of marrying him when I was a teenager.
Keep hope alive! LOL
That's right, SheCodes. He's the first.
Keep hope alive, indeed! :)
Have a great King holiday!
I have long wondered why none of the King children married. Great news for Martin III. Now as far as Dexter goes, it has been "rumored" in Atlanta that he is gay so I don't hold out much hope for that one. :|
Well, while I've had occasion to meet the King kids. I can't say I know any of them well. With that said, who knows when it comes to Dexter or any of the children.
Just think how challenging it must be to be the child of MLK. I believe there are few things about this that is easy. It could be a tremendous burden, in turn making it difficult to be married with children with great expectations hanging over one's head.
I wish them all tremendous blessings.
